Governor’s Visit 7th March 2018

The Port Fairy Coastal Group was pleased to meet The Governor, the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria and Mr. Anthony Howard QC and to explain the history, function and some details of the research the Group has undertaken during the last 5 years.

Nick Abbott, the Chairman of the Group explained that the impetus for the formation of the Group was a realization that the dune erosion in some parts of the beach was occurring at 10 times the historical average and that there was a need to accurately record this on a regular basis. Over the coming months it became apparent that the two tip sights buried in the dunes were going to be exposed. We alerted Moyne Shire Council to this probability and remedial action was taken to avert further progression.

Our Technical Officer, David Bills-Thompson then explained about the methodology of dune and beach contour monitoring and about the collaborative arrangement we have with Moyne Shire Council and DELWP. The monitoring is done be our group of volunteers with assistance from the Port Fairy Surf Life Saving Club. He mentioned that all the results are shared with these organizations and have helped them with their planning. The Group continues to monitor the effect of the structures that have been built by Moyne Shire Council to minimize further dune erosion.
